The Declaration of Independence established the freedom of Americans to live their lives and control their own destiny.

It was important to the colonies because unless they were recognized by other countries as an independent country, the war would be seen as an internal affair between England and her colonies. Any other country (such as France) would hesitate to join the fight against England under those circumstances.
