The war was not a symbol of liberty.

Some colonists rebelled because of various grievances (mostly, as always, over money). "Liberty" was their excuse. They really meant that they wanted to reduce taxes, and not have to pay for government services.

They weren't concerned about the liberty of their slaves or the native Americans.
