Daniel Boone (2 November 1734 - 26 September 1820) brought the first group of settlers to Kentucky in September of 1773. Among the group who were massacred was Daniel Boone's eldest son, James. The settlement was abandoned. Because of a 1775 treaty, land was bought from the Cherokee and a colony was established called Transylvania. Boone was hired to blaze a trail into the area, during which time he marked a path to the Kentucky River where he founded Boonesborough. Settlers were brought into Boonesborough in September of 1775.

Pioneer hero, Daniel Boone, also known as "The Trailblazer" was the first pioneer to trek across the Appalachian mountains. Known as the "Wilderness Road", Boone's path started in Virginia, went southward to Tennessee, then north to Kentucky for a total of two hundred miles.

Boonesborough (sometimes spelled, Boonesboro) was one of the first English speaking settlements west of the Appalachians. Before the end of the 18th century, more than 200,000 European people migrated to Kentucky/Virginia by following the route that Boone made.
