By definition, a Compound is a substance formed by the chemical combination of elements in fixed proportions. Water is made up of two elements, 2 Hydrogen atoms and 1 Oxygen atom. The molecule that is created between these two is called a compound as it is a combination of elements.

A compound is a combination of 2 more more elements. H and O ( Hydrogen and Oxygen ) are elements. Therefore if 2 elements are combined they form a compound.
