Water behaves differently from most other chemical compounds. In almost all substances the atoms and molecules move closer together as they get colder. ... Water, however, attains its greatest density at four degrees Celsius because the water molecules are packed closest together at this temperature.

Waters density is at the highest just a few degrees above freezing, and it decreases as its temperature changes in either direction(this is pure water, salt water or other solutions may behave differently). This is due to the unique crystal structure water takes on as it freezes and becomes ice, the crystal lattice being less dense than a more conventional solid state substance. :))

Water is different because of the relationship between the hydrogen atoms and the oxygen. because the oxygen sticks out in onne direction and the hydrogens in the other direction, charge is strangely distributed. This has the effect that the oxygen is attracted to hydrogen atoms in other water molecules. This attraction is called Van der Waals force.

Amongst other things this causes:

- the boiling point of water to be a lot further above its melting point than other liquids.

-ice to be less dense than liquid water.
