During 1800's France and Britain were both at war while the still fairly new america was neutral and traded to both sides.When the leaders of Britain and France heard of this, French ships attacked American ships in British waters and British ships attacked American ships in French waters. This led to the war of 1812

Britain and France both (1) wanted to have able-bodied sailors and ships to marshal against the rival power and (2) wanted to prevent American goods from reaching the others' shores. As a result, both European States began impressing American sailors into service and confiscating their ships and assets.
