The Nile is a river. Water from it was irrigated to water agricultural crops like corn, wheat. Humans and animals need water to survive, so people lived as close as they could to the river. However, the Nile would flood over during heavy rains. The river was also used for transportation (boats)

Because the Nile was both the major source of transportation and life giving water in ancient Egypt. Thanks to the regular pattern of the flooding of the nile, farms near the nile always produced a greater quantity of grain than needed for a single family. This allowed extra grain the government could take as tax to trade and to feed a standing army, without crippling the people. The most convenient method of moving anything (good and services) was along the nile, so trading cities were built on the nile to service and benefit from that traffic.
