The knights were religious, and would pay monks to do all their praying for them, which made the church very wealthy, not only strengthening the church, but also expanding it. The church itself was already having a major impact on society as it was, and the knights having given so much money to the church (which people looked to the church for hope) was making the church less and less as important in peoples lives, and the monks themselves were becoming corrupt by all the money they were making.
