It's really done as a means of holding the mouth closed. When viewing your loved one, you don't want their mouth to be hanging open. Many people's mouths naturally open if they don't have the ability to hold it closed. Even though we do it so naturally, it still takes effort that a deceased loved one doesn't have. So, the funeral home helps with that by closing it.

Not all the time ,when someone dies their lips are sewn together.

When someone dies their lips aren't really sewn together. Their mouth is

just closed.
