Watching the Jesus movie, this scene is played out where the Jewish priests actually bowed with their necks bared so the Roman soldiers could cut off their heads rather than allowing their graven images to be brought into the temple. I am looking for this in The Bible too but haven't found the reference yet.
The Kohenim (priests), however, they weren't leaders of the Jewish people, they were in charge of the Temple.
There have not been Jewish Priests since the destruction of the Second Temple.
No. There is no Temple in Jerusalem, so the sacrifices are not performed by the Kohanim or Jewish Priests. Judaism of today is primarily concerned with prayer.
It is forbidden to defile the Temple by entering it when spiritually unclean. This includes: not bringing a dead body into the Temple grounds not entering the Temple after contact with a dead body not entering the Temple after contact with a dead animal. For more, see Leviticus ch.11-12, ch.14-15, ch.22; and Numbers ch.19.
The leaders of the Temple were the Kohanim (High Priests). If you're referring to modern synagogues, the majority are run by an elected president with the spiritual leadership being the Rabbi and prayers being led by a Cantor.
Because the temple was destroyed along with the altar, and so we replace sacrifice with prayer
No. There is no minimun age requirement. Newborns are welcome in synagogues.
No they were not priests at all. As the temple was not there then.
There were two different groups. The Temple was run by the Priests and the Sanhedrin (Jewish court) was run by the Pharisees.
Rabbis are NOT priests. A Rabbi is a teacher. The term "Rabbi" means "great one." There were Jewish priests in ancient times, but after the ancient Holy Temple was destroyed, the priesthood ended.
yes
The Kohanim (כוה×?ים) were the ancient Jewish priests that served in the Temple in Jerusalem up until the year 70 C.E. The singular form is Kohen (כהן)Note: This word is not used for any other type of priests, such as Catholic priests, which are called Komerim.
