Why are planets also called as wanderers?

The very first astronomers merely looked at night at the stars. They noticed that almost all the stars circled the north star (Polaris) during the night (this is due to the Earth's rotation). Some of the stars seemed to be moving differently, with paths of their own, these were not stars, but were planets.

Most of the lights in the sky appear to be in fixed positions in the sky. In fact, up until the time of Copernicus, many scientists thought that the stars were fixed to a crystal sphere which rotated around the earth.

The problem was that there were just a few of the lights in the sky that moved around. They were called "wanderers", or "planets".
