Rivers were a key source of civilization and transportation, and still are today. Wherever there was water, there were civilization (and major cities. Take Paris, Rome, and London for example. All these major cities have long history and were situated on rivers. Rivers were an easy way to get water as well, which as we all know is perhaps the most important thing for life.
