Portuguese people are more mellow, well manered ad have a nicer country.

That about covers it :)

HA HA HA, that was funny, but here is the real deal: THERE IS NO RIVALRY. Some Portuguese with complexes would like to imagine one, but the fact is no in Spain remembers Portugal unless they get a hankering for some bacalao. :D

Portugal as a seagoing nation always was the most active in finding and developing trade routes and establishing trade agreements with local rulers. Because of the profitability and the risks of that trade, they wanted these agreements to be exclusive for them.

Spain was less active in this field, but they had the Italian Columbus find America for them and they considered it their exclusive domain.

When the Portuguese shifted their attention to south America, quarrels ensued. Before these could turn into endless wars, they submitted their claims to the Pope in Rome. The Pope then divided the globe into one part where the Spaniards would have the exclusive right to colonize and trade, and another where the Portuguese had exclusive rights.

This prevented further rivalry between Spain and Portugal. It didn't however protect them against the trade rivalry from (Protestant) countries, mainly the Dutch Republic and England. Funnily enough the only wars about trade fought later, were not between Portugal or Spain and either of these countries, but between England and the Dutch Republic.

The Pope brought them together and wrote the Treaty of Tordesillas which demarcated the border between what the Portuguese could colonize and what the Spanish could colonize.
