The linkage that connects the shift lever to the transmission could be out of adjustment or the reverse gear in the transmission itself could be bad. Usually it's the linkage.
my lincoln town car started with not going into park and now it wont go in reverse what is wrong and how do i fix it
Check and see if you have brake lights - If there are no brake lights then your shifter release solenoid will not release the shifter, it will be stuck in park. If this has happened then please check the wiring on the brake light switch which is located on the brake pedal. You will probably find a broken wire.
It needs to be in park or neutral to start. All cars have a "safety" switch which prevents starting in gear.
I have this same problem. A broken shifter box. I will repost a fix as soon asap.
In the car there's a small hole by the shift gears, take cover off, we used a metal nail file To press down, this now lets you shift gears.
If your shifter won't shift into reverse or 5th gear, it could be due to several issues. Common causes include low transmission fluid, a worn or damaged gear linkage, or a problem with the clutch (in manual vehicles). It’s also possible that there’s an issue with the transmission itself. It's advisable to have a professional mechanic inspect the vehicle to diagnose and address the problem.
If the shifter will not come out of park, check the brake light fuse. The shifter release solenoid uses the brake light switch to unlock the shifter.
Could be your starter.
