Why won't a 1993 Sentra automatic shift out of first on it's own The other gears all work fluids are fine and no slipping just won't shift?

It is most likely the governor gear. The same thing happened on my 94 sentra. Cost to repair was $175 including new fluid and cleaned filter. Three shops said the trans was shot and wanted $2000 plus to repair. A little research and an honest or competent shop and it ran like new. Its been fine for two years. This gear is used on many models and often fails about 100,000 to 130,000 miles. It is accessible from ouside the trans it doesn't need to be pulled.

If it's slipping, it's most likely a slipping clutch problem. If it's an automatic, you're talking about a complete transmission rebuild. If it's a manual shift you're talking about a new clutch plate, pressure plate and throwout bearing and you'll need to have the flywheel resurfaced. The vibration could be several problems, but you had better take care of the slipping problem first, because once a transmission starts slipping, it doesn't last long. Clutch surfaces in an automatic aren't very thick and they don't last long once they start slipping.
