Start with the Brake switch as it is the most common cause of your problem. Switch can be found at your local dealer for less then $50
If you are stuck and need to get the car home or to your mechanic you can use a pin sized object to get you going. You will want to start the car normally. STEP ON AND HOLD THE BRAKE while using the pin to push on a small round disc (about the size of the end of a cigarette) on shifter assembly and shift the car into drive. Now the car should drive and act normally. This will get you by until you can get the car properly fixed. Keep in mind if its the brake light switch YOU ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE BRAKE LIGHTS!
Are you putting your foot on the brake ?
This happened to me on my 2002 and I had to have it towed for service. I had the mechanic on the Mercedes road side assistance on the line and he told me that even if he came out to meet me it would need to go to the shop. It is a form of shift lock but there is no button to release it like on most vehicles. In the end they had to replace my keyless go control on the shifter.
its broken !! take it to a mechanic
you could have of torn a spider gear
Align the shift indicator orreplace it. Your problem is strictly column mechanical.
shift lock is malfunctioning. you can bypass it there is a little "switch" on the side of your shifter for this purpose. that should help temporarily i believe there is a sensor to tell it when to shift out of park and that when this malfunctions you're stuck in park
SOMETIMES IF THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED YOU WONT BE ABLE TO SHIFT OUT OF PARK. TRY JIGGERING THE STEERING WHEEL AROUND.
this happened to my 2006 Toyota highlander...look under hood...a piece of foam was stuck up under parking brake so it couldn't shift into park
The shift lever cable may be damaged or out of adjustment.
Hold your brake down while doing so.
Check the fuses- Shift interlock is the same circuit as brake lights. As a temporary measure - try to turn the key to 1st (unlock) position shift to neutral to start vehicle and then shift to Drive.
The brake must be pressed to shift newer cars out of park, if the brake light circuit has an issue it can make it impossible to shift out of park. Make sure the brake lights work, fuses ect. If the system is not working many cars have an override for towing, check owners manual.
