The current HIV drugs do not cure HIV because they only target active immune cells. Very early in HIV infection, the virus infects many cells and becomes integrated into the DNA of these cells/ These cells then become dormant or resting. The drugs do not work on these resting cells. Resting cells wake and rest as part of their normal function. When a resting cell wakes it rapidly multiplies again. This is why people need to stay on treatment.
