If it is an automatic then you are either low of fluid or your filter is dirty and needs changed. If that don't work than your transmission needs fixed and I would advise you to take it to a shop there are little spider gears inside a automatic transmission that drives your car those little spider gears run on little pins. Its a pain to do it yourself
''''I don't know where the above is coming from. On most automatics older ones are controlled by a speed governor and valve body you really need some pro expertise to deal with this type of problem as it could be as simple as cleaning a governor or restarting a control computer but in most cases a rebuild is in line if the unit has not been serviced as it should have.

Your '01 Lincoln Town car might not shift gears because it is low on transmission fluid or because the transmission is damaged.
If your car/truck is having problems shifting, it may be your transmition. You may want to get that checked out.
you have to shift gears
Shifter or Shift Knob
The transmission allows you to shift gears.

In the car there's a small hole by the shift gears, take cover off, we used a metal nail file To press down, this now lets you shift gears.
it could be the shift linkage being that both gears over there wont work
fluids are fine, no codes, and it wont shift past 2nd gear. any help?
you have to ease on the clutch, transition between releasing the clutch and applying the gas.
It matters if you have atuomatic or manual transmission. In an automatic car the gears shift on it's own. In an manual car you shift buy pushing the clutch and then shift from 1st gear to 2 gear.
There may not be any gears on an electric car. If you are asking about the control for direction like the gear shift on a normal car the is usually a switch on the dash.
