Watch repair can seem complicated, especially on a digital watch. When a watch stops working, most people either throw the watch away or take it to a repair shop immediately. But you may be able to repair your own digital watch and save yourself some money and a trip. First, if your watch has stopped working, open the watch case and remove the battery, taking care to note in what position the battery is set inside the watch. If the watch has gotten wet, or you think this may be the cause of the malfunction but aren’t sure, removing the battery and exposing it to the air to dry is your best bet. Let your digital watch air out as well, and use a small cotton ball to absorb any moisture on the inside of the case. Once you have given the battery time to dry out, check to see if it is fully dry and place it back inside the watch. It is important to remember how the battery was originally placed so you can put it back in the same position. If the watch is still not working, remove the battery once again and replace it with a new battery. If you need to purchase a new battery, you should bring the malfunctioning one with you to the store to make sure you get the right kind for your watch. If the new battery does not work, open the watch once again and see if there is any loose wiring. If this is the case, you may be able to nudge the wires back into place with tweezers. Before closing the watch case, check to see if there is any dust or dirt accumulation on the inside of the watch that may affect performance. Use a Q-tip clean the inside of the watch thoroughly. Be gentle, however, so as not to damage the components. After you have taken all of these steps, if your watch is still not working, you may need to take it to a professional watch repair shop. They can diagnose the problem and recommend whether the watch is worth repairing, or whether you should purchase a new one.
