Why is your new dog afraid to go out then afraid to come back in after he is coaxed outside?

Some dogs are just spooked like humans can get in the dark. Also, your dog may hear or smell something you can't see. I use a sensor light in the doggy run for my dogs and as soon as they go through the doorway to out into the doggy run the light automatically goes on. I also stand at the door until they do their business. Sometimes they'll bark while out there (could be a cat or a raccoon) and that's what dogs do. I give them the command to come in for fear of them waking up the neighbors. Try the sensor light and just stand at the door. A few times of this (leaving the door open if you can) and your dog will get over the habit.

Maybe he is afraid of change .. :S or maybe let him do it in his own time and go out the room and leave the back door open and see if its something your doing....maybe you could put some food outside to lure him out then when hes outside put some food inside to lure him in and soon he will see that there is nothing to be afraid of.

There could be several reasons. Consider carefully whether there might be a predator, such as a coyote on the prowl outside. He may have good cause for being cautious. A friend had a Yorkie snatched by a coyote out of her own fenced yard. She was able to rescue the dog and he recovered, but still, what a horrifying experience! Some dogs are concerned about storms. He may be able to sense one coming before you can. He may have had a bad experience outside at night that you didn't know about. Try going out with him on leash and making it a fun outing. Be happy and upbeat. Give him a treat for doing his business. Do something he really enjoys, but do it only at night so he can start looking forward to going out at night again.

Dogs can be scared for many reasons. They could have been abused or intimidated by a person. Dogs are cautious and some react to frightening things different than others because that's just how the dog was raised. different types of dogs react differently to stimulus than other dogs.

My dog was in training as a pup to be a police dog but she couldn't handle the loud noise of the gun fire. And now she is afraid of everything that is loud, like thunder, etc. Some dogs are afraid of strangers because when they were younger they weren't introduced to any new people. My dog is afraid of cars because when she was younger I would honk the horn to get her away fro the car. Different experiences in the dog's life could be the reason for what they are scared of.
