Several reasons the most common one would be to get more memory. Especially on some of the older computers that only come with 5 or less gigs of memory. I know I definatley need alot more than 5 gigs because that's not even enough to hold all of my music. Among others your hard drive may have broke and you don't want to buy an entire new computer when you can get a new decently large hard drive for less than 100 dollars.

You would replace a hard drive if it malfunctioned or had physical defects. You would also often replace it if the old one did not have a high enough capacity for your needs.

To wipe all the data and start with a clean slate. Sometimes when the OS has been badly abused this is the easiest way to restore system stability.
