People would not want to become Roman prisoners because unless they were nobles taken as hostages, they were either killed outright or enslaved. If they were male and looked big and strong, they would be either sent to gladiatorial schools, the mines or large farms. Not a very promising future.

The Ancient Romans dealt harshly with those who opposed themmilitarily. Sometimes, becoming a Roman prisoner would have been the old alternative to death.
