Replacing the water pump will not cause the check engine light to come on. Either it is a coincidence or you have accidentally disconnected a wire or damaged a sensor somehow.

Your check engine light should come on. You will have poor performance from the engine, no get up and go.

It could be a problem with your transmission. The same thing just happened to me. It required replacing some of the internal transmission parts, but did not require replacing the entire transmission.
The car will start and run poorly in the limp mode and the check engine light will illuminate.
Check for a bound up alternator, coolant pump or other pulleys. Also make sure to check the power steering pulley for broken edges, they are plastic and with age tend to break
Install a manual gauge to check actual pressure or try Replacing oil sending unit
Check actual engine temperature with a thermometer--if in acceptable range temperature sensor or gauge may be defective

Check the vin #'s because in the 1990's Chevy called their smaller line of vans "Lumina" also.
check neutral safety switch, or it is possible that a bad ignition switch could cause this...or loose or broken wiring!!
