Yes, as a matter of fact, the plain seed does have a purpose, many in fact. The first is to disable foes with the Unburden ability (by making them catch it) so they can only attack once. The second is as a quick food item, although it isn't nearly as effective as other food items. The third is that it doubles the power of the move Natural Gift.
