You have a gasoline leak. Unless you want this car to catch fire and burn up, have this looked into by a professional. Do not park this vehicle in a garage until you get it fixed. Your house may burn down if the vehicle catches fire.

How can you smell gas when I start MY 97 jimmy - most strange!.
You might have a gas leak in your front engine compartment. The heater pull in air from the front and therefore if you got a gas leak it will pull the smell in get it check asap.
If there is a gas smell inside the passenger compartment of a car, there is probably an exhaust leak in the system. Have it checked immediately.
To rid the engine compartment of gas fumes, thus reducing the possibility of explosion.
This means that you have a gas leak somewhere in the engine compartment. The smell comes from the AC air inlet pumping in fresh air from the engine compartment, which is where the leak is. Check your injector o-rings for deterioration. Also check your fuel pressure regulator and lines.
Running the exhaust blower will expel fuel or exhaust vapors trapped in the engine compartment. This is a precautionary step. A visual inspection the engine compartment is also a good habit to get into if you have not started the boat for some time. Check all of the fuel lines to make sure they were properly re-installed after replacing the gas tank. Also check the fuel lines going to, and in, the engine compartment to make sure you have no leaks.
More than likely a leak in the engine compartment somewhere..Especially if you turn the heat on and can smell you can be sure its coming from the front. If its only when the car is running then its probably along the fuel rail somewhere. If you can smell it just as strong when the car is off then its a line and your car probably does not get good gas mileage. start there or take to a mechanic asap! gas is way to expensive now a days!!
My engine light was on and I had a gas smell in my 2000 CRV when the pipe from the gas cap to the gas tank rotted out. It was replaced for ~$500 by Aamco.
because your engine is going to break down or when you start the car if the whether is cold, it makes it smell like gas
