This is to allow movement between the deck of the bridge and its supports. The effect of thermal expansion or contraction will change the length of the deck and would cause bending or cracking of the supports if the deck was firmly attached.

Bridges are designed for loads which are dynamic in nature. Specially the dynamic impact loading which occurs due to movement of vehicles. The rollers are put to make the structure flexible during such loading conditions.

the bridge has a roller at the end because as 6the bridge expands it would have no where to go so it would buckle or crush itself the roler is there with a slight gap , not big enough to notice but big enough for the roller to roll the bridged extra when expanded you annot feel this change when driving over it yet you can see it if u look at a picture from a hot day and one from a cooler one you an see that the bridge has expanded in both width and height!!!

Why are some bridges supported by rolles at one side?

Thermal expansion and contraction can put huge stresses into a large structure such as a bridge. To minimise this effect, the rollers are designed to allow the end of the bridge to move with the expansion and contraction.

Why are bridges placed on rollers?

when we have rollers at one end then it is allowed to expand freely without any thermal stress.in summers the bridges may expand due to the increase in the temperature and in winters the bridges may compress due to decrease in the temperature. the rollers help to increase/decrease the length of the bridge without any thermal stress. ----N.Doraditya

Is the length and the span of a bridge are the same?

Probably not. Length would be the entire length to the point the road starts. The span would be the section with air under it. Depending on the design, there could be a fair amout of the bridge supported by dirt or concrete at either end.
