If it was an earlier 2004 truck with the Lb7 duramax (8th digit of VIN would be 1) then it has 300hp. If it was a later 2004 truck with the LLY duramax (8th digit of VIN would be 2) then it has 310hp.

Yes, in 2000 the Malibu dropped its I4 engine leaving just the 3.1L V6 which remained the same in the 2000 to 2003 model years. It is also the same on the 2004 to 2005 Chevrolet Classic which is just a re-badged Malibu.
You can put that engine in a go-kart ,IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.But as far as a direct bolt in NO. You would have to USE the 2004 transmission, computer, Fuel pump, complete wiring harness for the engine and transmission. speed sensors and wiring harness among other things. It would be a costly project to start and to finish.
No it will not even come close to bolten up to the 96 engine. Chevy REDESIGNED the engine block and the transmissions. Nothing below late 1999 will enterchange with anything from late 1999 and up.
