Depends really. If you have a male cat and it hasn't been neutered yet, it will wonder off to find a female cat to mate with. Same with the other sex really. If you don't want a cat to run away, take it to the vets first to get it neutered.

If you don't abuse a cat it won't run away. Cats develop a bond with humans just as dogs do. Unlike dogs they won't stand for as much abuse (starvation, being beaten or anything that poses as a threat).

Strictly indoor cats can get disoriented and confused if they get outside, and yes, they can become "lost". Many, many family pets get lost every year and without tags or implanted chip, they end up at shelters. Millions of family pets are euthanized every year.

Dumping is a serious problem in the USA. Owners decide they do not want or cannot afford their pet. So they "dump" cats (or dogs) off in city parks or in neighborhoods where they believe the cat might find a home. House cats do not become hunters overnight so many of these dumped felines cannot fend for themselves and get sick and die. Others find a cat-friendly person and, if lucky, get taken into a new home.

Cats born outside, commonly called feral cats, often have a wide-ranging territory as they search for food or when males go into heat. But once a feral cat finds a reliable source of food, he/she will establish a place to sleep somewhere nearby. These cats easily find their way from den to food.

Feral babies do not have the experience of their mommas and so, babies can easily become distracted during play and lost, or simply become lost for other reasons (for example, if momma drops a young baby while moving her litter and then does not go back to get her dropped kitten). If found quickly enough by a human, babies have the highest chance of being rescued and adopted. (Older outdoor felines are often overlooked, or become too fearful to get close enough for a human to rescue.)

Since cats are noctural (night active), they roam after dark. Their presence may be missed during the day since cats will take refuge under bushes or front porches, or gain entrance to open garages or under parked cars. They may indeed be "lost" but since they keep hidden during the day, it is often too hard for owners to locate a lost cat or for cat-lovers to see / rescue the needy cat.

Some do, some don't. Phrasing it as "run away" implies it is not a regular habit, so probably not, unfortunately.

Cats that are used to being "put out" at night (think Fred Flintstone) have learned the routine and will be waiting by the door in the morning after prowling the nearby area. Those not used to this generally panic and freeze within a few hundred feet of the house, under a porch or bush, and hope you'll find them. They often are so afraid they won't come when called - you have to FIND THEM.

Often but not always. Cats are territorial and will try to stay in their own territory; but they are not very intelligent and can get lost, or they can wander into a dark corner and get locked in. Additionally, a stray may get attacked and killed by larger predators -- raccoons, coyotes, feral dogs -- or get injured some other way.

You can sometimes lead a cat back home with a trail of his favorite food... but be sparing because many less desirable animals also eat cat food.

When will my female cat return home?

Sometimes cats will go away from home for a few hours or so, and if that is the case your cat should be back soon. Then other times, when a cat is near to death it will leave it's house permanently. If that is the case then, sadly, your cat may never come back.
