It depends entirely on the person. Some people are visual learners and prefer to read a text to learn. However, educational psychologists have theorized more people are oral learners than visual learners. Oral learners learn best by hearing new information from lectures or discussions. The smallest group of learners are tactile learners, who learn by physically manipulating things. They'd rather learn in a lab setting than from a book or speaker, and they often go into skilled trades like carpentry or auto mechanics.
