I work at a hot tub factory building hot tubs. I also fix hot tubs.

Sand and grit will not ruin a hot tub immediately but it will definitely increase wear on many components. Long term exposure will decrease the time before things start to go wrong. The components that could be affected are:

1. Jet inserts: They could stop spinning, stop turning on/off, or fall apart.

2. Pumps: The impeller can wear rapidly and decrease water flow from constant sand impact.

3. Heater element: The heater element is usually in direct contact with fast moving water. Coatings on the element can be worn away by sand impact which can cause them to fail sooner.

Solution: Remove sand often! A cheap and easy way to do this is to siphon it out with a length of hose > Submerge the hose in the hot tub to fill the hose completely with water > Hold your hand over one end of the hose > Drop that end with a few extra feet of hose over the edge of the tub onto the ground while making sure the other end stays under the water in the tub > The water will start to siphon out > Now use the submerged hose end to suck up sand and grit from the tub. -- Dont forget to remove the hose when done or your tub will be empty next time you check it!

How can you remove cat feces stain on fiberglass bath tub?

Remove cat feces by turning the hot water on and let it run until it is hot. Then, plug the tub and fill it with hot water to the level of the stain. Put 1/2 cup of dishwasher detergent (not dishwashing liquid) in the hot water and mix it around. Let it soak overnight. It may need a light scrubbing when you drain the tub. A piece of 600 grit wet/dry aluminum oxide sand paper can also be used to wet sand the area. When the tub is clean, coat it with Rain-X windshield glass protectant. It may take a few applications since fiberglass tubs are porous. This will help the tub stay clean.

What causes grit to form on walls of hot tub?

It could be a few things, Alkalinity, high PH, Calcium deposits or skin and oils. Test the water to determine if PH and Alk. are in the correct parameters first. If Calcium is too high it will leave the deposits but most of the time the filter isn't able to remove all of the skin and oils that we lose from the epidermis quickly enough and they stick to the shell.
