After the IUPAC Recommendation 2002 - Naming new elements: The elements can be named after a mythological concept, a mineral, a place or a country, a property or a very known scientist.
The limit was reached some time ago, as far as naturally occurring elements is concerned. The new elements are created through nuclear fusion - bombardment of the nucleas of lower elements - and usually have a half-life of microseconds or less, before they fission back to a lower and more stable element. The atomic size of the elements in the 100's is so large they cannot hold on to their own parts, and so they break down instantly to lower elements. At this point, they have no practical purpose except for scientific study. If these elements can one day be made to form stable compounds, we might find ourselves in a whole different ball game, but for now, we still have only our original ninety-something to play with.
If more elements are discovered in the future, they will be added to the periodic table. New rows will be created in the table to accommodate these elements. The properties and characteristics of these new elements will be studied and used to expand our understanding of the natural world.
