Yes it can run with water only but the overheating & freezing protection will not be there

- An engine will run without antifreeze or water. The antifreeze only cools the engine. What you have to watch is not to let it run too long. If the engine starts to over heat, it can cause a lot of damage, like a warped head. If you are out, not too far from a safe place to park a car and something breaks and you lose the anti freeze, it is still fine to drive the car, but remember to stop and let the engine temperature decrease. It will get you to where you have to go, and it will minimize damage. I did this one time when I was like 15 minutes from home, I stopped 3 or 4 times on my way home, each time at least 15 to 30 minutes to let the engine cool. After I fixed the leak, the car was running the same as before the leak. I do stress don't let the car over heat. It is best to have the car towed when it has no antifreeze, but life doesn't always allow for that, so that is why I'm saying this.

If it is a slow leak, water will keep the engine cool until you can get home also.

Note: This is to be done at your own risk, it can cause serious problems to your car, either resulting in the lose of the car or a very high repair bill.

Also, anti freeze should be handled carefully, it is not safe for humans, animals or the environment to be around, always clean up what you can and return it to the proper recycling center.

If you run without antifreeze your car will over heat. Antifreeze is an engine coolant aka it works with your car to make sure that you engine doesn't overheat.
