If the network has WAP encryption, it takes about hour maybe two to hack the network and then if you are using your computer about couple hours you get your passwords. The only exception is bank websites which are using secured connections even in open (not secured) networks.
If the network is using WPA-PSK it takes much more time to get the keys. But it's still doable.
WPA-PSK2 with AES will give one of the best protections so far.
If you are using encrypted VPN connection you do not need to worry about such things.
