From latin where "i" is simply a connecting vowel and the "an" or in some cases "anus" which shows ownership. For example, "Christ-i-an-us" (those belonging to Christ or Christ's) where the "us," in most cases, leveled in Middle English to "es" or "s." So "Christianus" became "Christians."
