Please understand that humor plays an important part of my attitude, therefor the following should be recognized as a whimsical reply to the matter of "äge as a suffix" to words in the English languAGE
Understanding the "age" suffix
Speaking a "tongue" ("langue" in French) is referred to in English as conversing in a language.
As well, we are all quite well aware that:
A number of bags are called baggage,
When one lugs baggage they are carrying luggage,
When items are carted , the activity is called cartage.
One who is occupied by rhythmically passing a threaded needle back and forth, through layers of varied thicknesses and differently shaped fabrics with a fluid motion may be referred to as a sewer.
By following a deliberately preplanned continuous straight or curved line, effectively joining these materials together, clothing is produced by a sewer, the resulting garments must thence be called SEWAGE.
And since attire is also referred to as garb, the final solid result of those fluid motions described above, may be referred to as GARBAGE.

The AGE suffix probably describes the result of a specific activity.
Hence damage can be a direct result to the environment when building a dam.
