Normally you need to be exalted with a race to get their mount; however, at level 20 you can get your race's mount from its mount vendor.

Anything from horses to dragons to choppers to helicopters to woolly mammoths .... you can get your first mount at level 20 and it's 60% faster than running. Epic mount at 40 - 100% faster. At level 60, you can get the 150% flying mount in Outlands. At 70 you can pay for the Epic riding skill and fly at 280%. Some special mounts from achievements and boss drops will allow you to fly at 310%.

At level 68 you can go to Northrend (Wrath of the Lich King content), but will be unable to fly until level 77 and purchase the "Cold Weather Flying" skill from the trainer in Dalaran or Sholazar Basin. You can get "Cold Weather Flying" sooner (level 68) if you already have an 80 and buy the "Tome of Cold Weather Flight" from the trainer.

There are many mounts in the game, of various levels of accessibility. Once you reach level 20, you will be able to learn the riding skill from a riding trainer. You should get a mail in your mailbox telling you where the closest one is.

Close to the riding trainer of your race, you will also have a mount seller, who will be able to sell you the mount to ride on appropriate for your race.

You can gain more mounts by reaching Exalted status with other factions, through various raids and achievements, as well as random drops and world events. See the second related link for a list of mounts in WoW - each should also tell you how to get it.

Note that in this list, there are also mounts that you can no longer get - so check that before seeing a mount you'd like and rushing off to get it.

There are no mounts that a level one can use. Normally you need to be at least level 20 to start using your races mounts. There are however a couple special mounts that can be possibly used during certain holiday events....namely the rickty ol' broom from the All Hallows Eve event.

The starting mount is available at level 20, it is a 60% mount. After that, it is level 40 for the 100% mount, level 60 for the starting flying mount, and level 70 for the epic flying mounts.
