The modern banjo was invented in America in the late 1800s so it didn't exist at the time when the traditional concept of an orchestra was being developed.
The banjo was derived from African instruments made of dried gourds, which were essentially drums with strings pulled taut. Compositions for orchestras tended not to score for localised indigenous instruments, unless the composer was looking for a "particular" sound.
That said, there's no reason it couldn't hold its own in an orchestra with its unique, sharp, and precise tones. Some banjo virtuosos such as Bela Fleck have performed and recorded classical compositions with great accuracy on the banjo.
The banjo is not considered a member of the orchestra, so the part it would play would be as soloist or part of a 'concertino' group added to the orchestra. Other than as a guest, the banjo would not appear in any symphony orchestra or chamber orchestra.
Generally not, unless a specific piece calls for one.
Only if the music calls for a banjo. I wouldn't see them marching, but maybe standing in the pit playing a solo.

One can metaphorically compare a brain to an orchestra in the sense that the many different instruments of the orchestra act together to create a symphony, while the brain is able to coordinate the many different organs, muscles, and functions of the body, into the coherent process of living. But perhaps a closer comparison would be of an orchestra's conductor, to the brain.
