It depends. My hair is naturally curly, and when it's short, the curls are obvious. If Iet it grow long (enough to tie into a pony-tail) the curls kind of 'drop out' and it appears more straight. I guess you could use hair-straighteners to manually straighten it, but you would have to keep repeating the process.
