In my opinion the name should be retained. It would be historically accurate. The dogs name was also used as the code word for the breaching of the dams.
In our all too PC world, correctness can sometimes get in the way and people take offence over nothing. Thousands go to RAF Scampton where 617 squadron was based at the time of the dams raid and see the dogs grave without being offended that his name is clearly seen on the grave stone. After doing some research I understand (and correct me here if I am wrong) that his name is Swahili for black. Whats wrong with that?
Historical accuracy should be retained, changing the dogs name is like changing history.
In some ways those are one in the same: a "changed" child will demonstrate changed behavior. Redirecting a child from one dangerous activity to another less dangerous activity has obvious benefits. Redirection as opposed to punishing behavior will result in a better adjusted child. Redirecting a child from one activity that a parent finds offensive to another that is less offensive may change a child from one who was curious (say, about his dog's doodoo) to one who becomes more nervous about exploration. Redirection can be positive or negative, but ultimately does have an effect on both a child's personality and his behavior.

Yes. The movie changed very little of the actual plot. The overall message of not judging people, standing up for what is right, staying true to your friends and not dwelling on dreams were all in the movie.
