Oil level is low. Serious engine damage will occur if this is not corrected. Check the oil level!
At least 4 quarts. Park on a level surface. Drain the oil, remove and replace the filter. Add 4 quarts. Start the engine and let it run for 1 minute. Shut it off and wait 45 minutes. Check the level and add until full. You now know the answer. My guess would be 4.5 quarts, but it could be 5 quarts. Do not overfill!!!
If the oil level in the oil pan reaches the rotating assembly it will whip the engine oil into a froth. This will lead to problems and damage internal engine parts.
Standard capacity would be 5 quarts, but there are many options that could increase the capacity up to ten quarts. Some were equipped with engine oil coolers, deeper oil pans or both. I would buy 10 quarts and I would drain the oil and change the filter. I would add 5 qts and start the engine just long enough to fill the filter about a minute. Shut off the engine and check the oil on the dipstick. As needed add additional quarts, restart and recheck until level is correct
Haynes Repair Manual states that a 2002 - 2003 Ford Explorer Sport needs 5.0 quarts for V6 and 6.0 quarts for V8 of SAE 5w-30 Engine oil (SAE 5w-20 for V8). Over-filling to 6.5 quarts could damage your engine. Add 5 qts and then check your dipstick to see if you need to add more. Remember: 1 quart will take you from the MIN level indicated on the dipstick to the MAX level. Stay in-between to be safe. you nedd to put 6.5 quarts
14 quarts - Engine capacity is 17 quarts. There are many internal parts that use engine oil under high pressure such as fuel injectors and approximately 3 quarts are retained inside the engine after the oil pan is drained. After draining oil, put in approximately 13 quarts and check oil level, carefully filling to proper level.

Factory pan, about 5 quarts. Remember to fill the oil filter before you put it on, so the engine doesn't start "dry". After filling oil, run the engine for a few minutes then wait about 5 minutes and check level on dipstick. You should be very close to correct, if slightly low add, a slight overfill will not cause any engine damage.
Around 4.5 quarts with oil/filter change. Park on level surface. Drain oil and change filter. Add 4 quarts, start the engine and run for 30 seconds. Shut off and wait 30 minutes. Check level and add as necessary. Do not overfill.

A 3.8 liter engine holds up to five quarts of oil. You can start with 4 quarts, start the engine, let it run for 2 minutes, turn it off and wait for another 2 minutes then?æcheck the oil level. You can add more oil if needed.?æ
Normally 6 quarts in the 4.0L. Put in 5, run the engine, shut it off and check the level to be sure.
