Great writers have spent years trying to describe, disect and unravel this very situation. As the plot of any Hollywood movie will show, when a friend has romantic feelings for other friend, there are generally three possible outcomes.

First of all, you could confess to your friend that you want to be "more than friends" only to be severely rejected, thus loosing your friendship. Second, you could confess your love to your friend, end up getting physical, even dating for a short while and then split up, ultimately loosing your original friendship after the breakup. Lastly, you could approach your friend with your feelings and find that you both have such a strong friendship that it would be crazy not to be partners. You've heard of people saying they "married their best friend and soulmate" and this is exactly what they mean.

I believe friends make the best life partners because you already know that you can talk easily together, you're comfortable spending time together, have a good report and mutual respect, and you already have the much needed trust that comes from quality friendships. It's like having all the awkwardnesss of the first few dates behind you. Perhaps your admission of love will be just the catalyst needed that ignite the passion in you both.

However, I have to point out that in many situations, two people who are friends for a long time and have never explored a romantic relationship may not be compatible for romance. Think about it: if you've been friends for so long and it's never come up before, chances are it's because neither of you feels the flame of attraction.

Think about this with an objective, critcal eye before you do anything. Are you and your friend more like siblings? Is there any flirtation at all? Could you be hoping for an unobtainable outcome? I've seen many a straight woman try to force romance with her sweet gay besty only to be heartbroken by rejection that she already knew would happen. Ask yourself: could you just be lonely/bored? Would you and your friend really work out? You both know each other's worst traits after all.

Having said that, if you know the risks and your heart is still strongly inclined to seek romance with your friend, then you have to do what you think is right. If your heart leads you to your friend, then you should speak your heart. If you want the outcome enough no risk is too great.

To approach your friend, I'd sugget being as open and honest as possible. Talk when you're sober and mellow; don't blurt it out when you're drunk or in the middle of an argument. Tell him/her that you are aware of the risk, let your friend understand that you have thought critically about what could happen to your friendship. Tell him/her about why you feel compelled to bridge the gap between friends and lovers.

And if you get rejected, don't get angry or embarrassed. Be cool. Salvage the friendship. This is your friend after all, someone who is there for you during the awkward and difficult times in your life. Ultimately the most important thing wether you become lovers or not is to remain communicative friends.
