The misoprostol advantage: is one (1) 800mg tab, followed by a second (1) 800mg tab in 24 hours - lightly moistened with 2 or 3 drops of clean water - placed vaginally causing the cervix to become soft and open and the uterus to contract which expels the contents.

Disadvantage: Generally causing severe cramping, heavy (or heavier) than menstrual type cramps followed by heavy bleeding, passing clots and passing tissue. Process 75%-85% complete within 7 to 14 days of second dose. The subsequent bleeding can last for 2 weeks or longer.

Misoprostol efficiency: in the 9 weeks since LMP requires additional treatment 15% to 25% of the time - a third dose of misoprostol, D&C or aspiration procedure for prolonged or excessive bleeding, incomplete TAB (remaining tissue in the uterus).

Misoprostol inefficiency: 10% of women using misoprostol will experience an ongoing pregnancy - Exposure to misoprostol in the womb causes Central Nervous System abnormalities and lower and upper limb anomalies.

The side effects of: nausea, vomiting, chills, fever, pelvic pain, diarrhea, dizziness, rash and headache - usually last only 24 hours and is managed with oral pain medication.

Medical care is advised for: severe bleeding(soaking 2+ maxi-pads an hour) for 2 hours following use - Abrupt onset of heavy bleeding two weeks or more after use - Scant or very little bleeding in the seven days after use - Fever lasting longer than 24 hours.
