This was a problem I've had for quite a while. But, after catching up on my command prompt coding, I found the solution. Your disk of the hard drive is probably fragmented which will cause random bsods of random error codes. And, to make it worse, the bsod shuts down after a couple of seconds so you don't have time to copy the error. I will assume that you still can have access to your desktop with the exception that it shuts down randomly. Open your start menu. I hope you have Vista or Windows 7 because I forget how to do this in any of the other operating systems. Type "cmd" in the search box. At the top of the start menu, there should be a section that holds a program called cmd with an icon that is a black box with "C:\_" in it. Right click on this icon and click "run as administrator" in the menu that appears. A window with a black background and white text should appear. Now, type "chkdsk /r /f" and press enter. The command prompt will respond by giving a message saying about how chkdsk can't run. Ignore it. Just type y then press enter. It will respond with something like this operation will begin at next start up. Now, you restart your computer. When it restarts, your computer will boot, then go to a console-based OS looking screen (It's black with white letters). Let your computer sit for about an hour, or maybe a day depending on how badly messed up your hard drive was. chkdsk will probably fix your problem. It is a subroutine implanted into Microsoft OS that is designed to clean fragmented disks.

Sometimes your computer shuts down or you get the blue screen of death and you don't know what to do because you are not a computer tech. In this instance you would need a computer help desk.
