You may have a short in the electrical system but that would show if the battery does not charge. The battery could also be bad from the factory even if carrying a charge. Try a different battery and see what happens. You may also have a fuel pump going out or plugged fuel filter to the carb or off the gas tank. If you can hear a 'ping' when your car is running, replace the water pump.
It sounds like an ECM (Electronic Control Module) or Ignition coil. Check for spark and then, if no spark, take the coil to be tested to isolate if it is the coil or ECM. ECM is located inside the distributor and controls spark to each plug.

If the alternator is installed incorrectly, yes, it can drain the battery.
wires are crossed or you have a short in the wiring from the alternator to the battery.
Alternator defective, or alternator belt broken or slipping.
Alternator is not charging the battery
You have a bad alternator.
No, not unless you installed a 6 volt battery instead of a 12 volt battery.
Dead battery and/or alternator.
first unhook the battery cables and then take the alternator belt loose and then take the 3 bolts out that hold the alternator on and take the wiring harness out of the alternator and the red battery cable off and it's out.
battery tests good, alternator tests good, new voltage regulator installed and still no charge to battery from altanator .
The alternator diode rectifier converts the AC current being produced by the alternator to DC from which most of the electronics installed and battery use.
Alternator not charging battery due to a bad fusable link?
The alternator is either over or under charging.
