It is hard to say with out knowing any more detail but there are several factors that can give you a false (positive or negative) pregnancy result. You could have had a negative result due to diluted urine, morning urine is the best when doing a pregnancy test. This can cause the lines on the pregnancy test to be faint eve though they are positive. You should do another test because every two days a woman hCG (the pregnancy hormone) doubles. You could have had a false positive if you had a chemical pregnancy (which is very rare) where some women occasionally have tissue that has higher level of the hCG hormone causing the test to read positive. I suggest taking another test, if it is positive you should contact your OB/GYN as soon as possible and schedule an appointment.

You should take another one. There are a few reasons for faint lines on an at-home pregnancy test. You could have taken the test too soon, your urine was diluted, you were using a sensitive test, or you experienced a chemical pregnancy. To ensure better clarity my suggestion is to buy a more expensive test that clearly reads "pregnant" or "not pregnant" or you could buy some other form of a digital test. That will help with any confusion that might occur with pregnancy tests that require you to read lines or dots that may appear faint.

There are several things that can contribute to a negative pregnancy test even if you are pregnant. Some medications can give you a false negative, the timing of the test can affect the results. If you did not follow directions properly; if you let the test sit for too long the results may read negative after a while. It is important to read the results within the amount of time given on the instructions of that particular pregnancy test you bought. If you did not perform the test properly (example: you drank a lot of fluids before taking the test, which can dilute your urine). Etc

To ensure the best results:

  • Take the test in the morning, if possible, because your hCG (pregnancy hormone) levels are at it's highest
  • Don't drink a bunch of fluids before taking the test because it will dilute your urine and can affect the results
  • Take the test no more than 1 day before expected period. Although some test say that you can see results up to 5 days before your missed period, the percentage of accuracy is very low.
  • urinate for as long as possible on the foam-like strip
  • Check the results in the window frame of time suggested by the instructions of the pregnancy test.
  • On rare occasions you can encounter a false positive due to improper testing, expired pregnancy tests, rare medical conditions such as certain types of cancer, evaporation lines, a recent pregnancy or a chemical pregnancy.
