Art directors are responsible for organizing media to be used in either filming, ad creation or other print related matters. In addition to determining the appearance of the media to be created they must also hire or select staff to work on the project such as illustrators, photographers and choose any props that need to be used.

Some of the other responsibilities of art directors may include brainstorming and coming up with ideas for projects, or helping to redesign where needed. Art directors have a median salary of $63,000 per year but salaries up to $100,000 and up to $138,000 have been reported. This is determined by the hiring company, experience and job responsibilities. Some art directors may work on a freelance or per-project basis instead of a regular schedule.

Education for an art director may vary depending on relative experience and individual job requirements but on average an undergraduate degree is required though some may have other levels of degrees. It is not uncommon for the job to require at least four years of management experience in a related field. Other mandatory job skills and knowledge may vary depending on the position. Art directors who specialize in computer generated art need to have experience and knowledge of the various programs used. The position of art director requires many different skills that includes but is not limited too customer service, planning, budget and monetary management as well as being able to coordinate and finish tasks on time within a team environment.
