Many people make use of polyurethane or urethane foam when they want to insulate their home or fill their chair, couch or mattress. It may even be used as a mattress bad. They may also be more well known as memory foam, and it gets this name from its ability to contour to a person’s body shape and “remembers” its shape. If you do not want to ruin the foam or make it “forget” your body, you will need to wash it with the utmost care. Therefore, it will require more patience than any other kind of fabric will require, but it is still possible for you to wash polyurethane foam right in your home.
For this project, you will need a bathtub, a bottle to spray with, some laundry detergent, some warm water and a washcloth.
Anyone who has ever owned a sofa bed or any type of portable bed has probably slept on a polyurethane mattress. This soft material is very absorbant and will begin to show signs of use relatively quickly. With a little time, and by following the listed steps, you will be able to greatly improve the appearance of your mattress.
First, you will need to remove any coverings that may be in place over the mattress. Remove the mattress from the bed frame and vacuum both sides with a handheld vacuum attachment to remove any small particles that may have accumulated on the surface. The next step will involve a large amount of water, so you would be wise to take the mattress outside or perhaps place it in your bathtub. Spray the entire surface with a liquid fabric cleaner and, after allowing the cleaner to set for several minutes, rinse the foam thoroughly with a water hose or under the faucet.
After all of the cleaning solution has been removed, gently press the foam to remove any excess water. It is important at this point not to wring out the mattress, as this can permanently damage the stability of the foam. Place the mattress in an area with good airflow to allow it to dry out completely. This will be the most time consuming portion of the process. After the foam is completely dry you will need to once again spray it with water, although this time you should use a low pressure spray and only lightly wet the surface. By drying the foam with a dry towel, you will be able to remove any remaining fabric cleaner residue. Now place the mattress outside in the sunshine to finish drying.
If there are any odors that your mattress has absorbed, they can be removed by dusting the surface with baking soda and applying a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. You should only attempt this after the foam is totally dry. This solution should be rinsed off in the same manner as the fabric cleaner, and the mattress should be dried out once again.
By using these steps, you will be able to extend the life of polyurethane foam mattress and keep it looking clean and fresh for all of your guests.
Polyurethane or latex foams.
Polyurethane foam is potentially dangerous to one's health. Polyurethane is dangerous to the respiratory system, and is deemed as toxic. It's better to go for another material that's safe, especially if the mattress is for kids.
hypoallergenic polyurethane foam
Under normal, everyday usage, polyurethane foam does not pose a health risk for adults. However, some fire retardants used to tread the foam in baby mattresses (namely pentaBDE) can separate from the mattress and spread into the air.
Unfortunately there is not a memory foam mattress topper that can be washed in the washing machine or dried in the dryer. Therefore, they are spot clean only.
