Ballet is a great way for your child to learn coordination, rhythm and balance. Getting your child interested in ballet may seem difficult, but fear not – these tips will have you child pirouetting for joy.

- Sign-up for a class.

Many recreation centers and dance studios offer introductory classes for ballet. There are also professional ballet schools, if you feel your child is ready to critically study classical ballet. If not, then choose a more relaxed, introductory class. These classes are a great way to pique you child’s interest, and assess their aptitude for ballet. There may be classes in your area that are mommy-and-me or daddy-and-me interactive venues that encourage participation from a parent and the child together. Any class will be beneficial for your child on multiple levels including social, physical, and emotional.

- Turn up the music.

Most children love to move and dance about when they hear music. It is greatly beneficial to turn up the music and allow your child (and you) to dance to the rhythm. Dancing to music can interest a child in ballet, and it definitely encourages them to express themselves.

- Watch kid-oriented dance videos.

There are several videos available that are geared towards kids dancing, and just watching the video with your child can be helpful in getting them interested in dancing. It is a good idea to encourage your child to dance along with the kids in the video, and gauge their interest in dancing.

- Encourage dancing.

It goes a long way to encourage your child to dance and move. Whether it is a fun activity or a spontaneous event, dancing should be fun, exciting, and rewarding. Feel free to encourage dancing by starting to move when you hear music or are in a happy mood. This will demonstrate to your child that dancing is fun

- Attend a performance.

Consider bringing your child to a ballet performance. Be sure that your child is able and attentive enough to endure a performance, which may be anywhere from one to two hours. Also, be sure to check if the performance venue is kid-friendly, and whether there are children usually in attendance. Some performances are not designed for children, so exercise caution when selecting an event. Consider attending with another family with children, to hopefully encourage several children to consider that ballet looks fun and interesting.
