Drivers who live in cold climates are all too familiar with the scenario where sand used to improve traction on snowy or icy roads mixes with snow melt water and freezes into small clusters. These small clusters migrate to the sides of the road for the most part, but some of them accumulate in the center of two traffic lanes, waiting to become a high speed projectile when run over by vehicles changing lanes. At highway speeds, one of these clusters getting lifted across the road into the opposite lanes has an effective speed equal to the speed of the car that propels it added to the speed of the car that has the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The result is a rock chip, often accompanied by a small crack. If left unattended, these small defects can spread across the entire windshield, creating a visibility problem. This type of crack presents another danger in that it ruins the shatterproof properties of the windshield.

There are issues in warm climates, too. Hail, or any sort of road debris such as a lug nut or small rocks washed onto the road surface by rain can have the same results.

The necessity of replacing a windshield under these or similar circumstances cannot be emphasized strongly enough. Delaying could prove far more costly than replacing a windshield.

The silver lining is that unless it is a windshield for a rare or exotic car, it is not too expensive or inconvenient. Interestingly enough, side windows can often cost more than double what a windshield costs, even though the glass area is way under that of a windshield.

The competition among glass companies is extremely fierce. Combined with high demand for new windshields, prices are some of the most reasonable going for any automobile repair/maintenance service.

Some auto insurance companies offer glass coverage, but even though windshield replacement is a fairly common occurrence, many people choose to forego the additional insurance premium, and just take their chances.

Most windshield repair business will come to a residence or place of work free of charge. If you decide to go to their shop, which is a good idea during very cold or wet weather, the process will require from one to one-and-a-half hours.

The only cautionary measure that need be observed is to do your level best to keep the vehicle out of rain, snow or car washes for at least 24 hours, or a little longer if possible.
