The U.S. legal system's complexities arise from the many different areas of codified and uncodified federal and state law. The United States Constitution forms the base of federal law. Federal law circumscribes state and territorial law. Local law is governed by local authority, delegated by the state. There are two basic types of law: procedural and substantive. Procedural law is further broken down into criminal and civil law procedures. Substantive law is subdivided into the meat of law, its substance, of criminal, contract, and tort law. Lawyers give legal advice and assist clients in legal proceedings, while attorneys are legally appointed to act in legal proceedings. Most times, lawyer and attorney are used synonymously. There are several court systems in the United States. The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest court of the land. Other courts are your local courts, federal and district courts, appeals courts, and claims and international trade courts. Law encompasses a vast resource of knowledge and it continues to grow and be amended at a dizzying pace with the advent of new technologies, new systems of economics, new ideas to build off of at the family, community, local, state, and federal levels.
